#002 - Hard work pays off

Introduction

After the slow start to the season, my plan was to get out for a couple of nights over the weekend to try and get a longer session on the lake rather than just an overnighter.

I got down to the lake at around 6pm, and it soon became apparent that it was very unlikely that I was going to get in any decent swims as nearly all the swims were taken. I should've known better for a bank holiday weekend !!

After multiple laps of the lake and speaking to other anglers, there weren't any swims that took my fancy and I didn’t want to set up just for the sake of fishing, especially with the amount of pressure on the lake. The lake notoriously fishes harder when there’s a large amount of pressure so it was back home to tie some rigs and sort out kit ready for the next session.

Something a little different

With the club lake being busy, and a fishing fix to fulfill, I decided to get the feeder rod out and go down to a local quiet day ticket lake for the morning.

I used a flat-bed method feeder with 2mm pellets soaked in KARPER Sweetcornz Pellet Soak and Betaine green groundbait, with an assortment of hookbaits from the KARPER match range.

Overall, it was a very hectic day and managed to catch around 10 carp and some bream in a short 4 hour session for about 70 lb of weight overall.

By no means am I experienced in match fishing so it was nice to get out and try something different and put the KARPER match range through some testing, with some great results.

Back to normal

On the bank holiday Monday, it was back down the campaign lake to try and hopefully get a decent swim for the night. I left it until around 10am till I arrived at the lake, to be able to do multiple laps of the lake and get a gauge of who was leaving and also where fish had been coming out.

Eventually, people began packing up and a swim that I wanted to get into became available. The angler in there before me had caught a couple of carp out of here in the 4 nights he had done so this gave me some confidence of being able to have something out, considering only a couple of other fish had come out of the whole lake over the weekend.

I setup using similar rigs to previous sessions, using German Rigs, fished with an KARPER SG Boilie tipped with a KARPER 12mm Dispersion Sweetcornz popup

The baiting approach for this session was slightly different, and my bait of choice was KARPER SG Boilies and KARPER Sweetcornz boilies mixed with some sweetcorn grains. This was all then soaked in the SG Energiser Liquid. I found a couple of spots up tight to an island and put out a few spombs of bait out over each rod.

It only took a couple of hours, and my right hand rod was away and after a powerful fight, with the fish trying to take me into a snag down my right hand side, I eventually slipped the net under the carp. I knew straight away this looked to be a decent fish as it had a decent width to it.

I got the rod straight back out again, then went about setting up the self-take setup, before lifting the fish out of the water and weighing it. It weighed in at 26lb 4oz, and was a good start to the session and nice to get a decent one.

Unfortunately, nothing else happened that night and I packed up early in the morning to head off to work.
